About

Colony of Asian skunk cabbage
By 15 minutes walk from Sashimaki JR Tazawako Line station, you will find beautifully contrasted bright green leaves and snow white  flowers of “Mizubasho”- asian skunk cabbage- surrounded by white alder forests.  “Mizubasho” meaning “water banana” is Japanese type of Lysichiton camtschatcensis commonly known as “Skunk Cabbage” in English for its malodorous smell.  However, contrary to the English name, Japanese “Mizubasho” does not have bad odor, but rather it has smells somewhat sweet and looks beautifully neat and clean.  Here, Mizubasho festival and special events will be held in April and May, and you can enjoy local foods and products.  After walking through the marshland, you will find local fish and traditional local foods at restaurants at the end of the road.
