Hotta castle fort ruins is a national historic site which had been used as a government office in Heian era (about 1,200 years ago).  This is the very fist National Historic Site from Akita.

The vast extent site is 87.8 ha, and the long surrounding wooden fort has 3.6km long.  It is believed that the fort was built in 800 a.c. However, since not many documents about the site remain until today, the site is wrapped in mystery.  The beautiful scenary from this historic site is worth seeing.
